Trap loan scheme

Side profile of a grey squirrel

If you are experiencing problems with grey squirrels, we can help you with our trap loan scheme. With support from the Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels project we lend out single live capture traps (which doesn’t kill the squirrel, just catches it) which will allow you to isolate the grey squirrel.
Don’t worry if you also have reds and are concerned about trapping them – if you inadvertently catch one just let it go – the trap will not harm it but remember, it is illegal to intentionally kill or injure a red squirrel.
We are particularly keen on householders living in or on the outskirts of Perth taking part in the trap loan scheme.

Before you consider trapping you should be aware of the following:

  • It is illegal (and reckless) to release a grey squirrel once caught – it must be humanely killed.
  • You are legally required to check any traps that are set at least once a day (for trapped animals and to ensure the trap has not been interfered with).

Our friends over at Fife Red Squirrel Group have some useful advice on successful trapping. If you would rather get some practical first-hand advice, consider getting trained by BASC Scotland.
